Coronavirus: Ohio begins vaccinating 16+, Athens County reports 48 new cases

Athens County reported 48 new coronavirus cases in the past week, bringing its total case count to 4,808. 118 cases are currently considered active. The county remains in the red zone for high exposure and spread.

No new COVID-19 related deaths have been reported in the last week, and five Athenians were hospitalized due to the virus. The total death toll stands at 52.

So far, 6,009 Athens residents have received one dose of a coronavirus vaccine, while 4,158 are fully vaccinated.

On Monday, Ohio officially begins vaccinating Phase 2D, which includes all Ohioans ages 16 and older. However, Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine announced last week that vaccination sites with open appointments could begin scheduling those in Phase 2D prior to March 29. Those under 18 must obtain parental consent to receive the Pfizer vaccine, which is the only vaccine that has been approved for use on minors.

Cases among Ohio University students increased slightly last week, with a daily positivity rate of 1.5%. All but two OU residence halls are currently at the yellow level, reporting 0% seven-day positivity rates. Shively and Carr Halls are at the orange level reporting 1.1% and 0.6% seven-day positivity rates, respectively.

Currently, isolation space is at 5.04% capacity and quarantine space is at 1.35% occupancy.
